Permanent GNSS Course Network of Bangladesh

GNSS course is short for Global Navigation Satellite System Continuously Operating Reference Station.

It is a modern technology that uses signals from American GPS, Russian GLONASS, European Union's Galileo, China's Beidou and other navigation satellite systems to obtain precise positioning, time and speed. The GNSS course network is the core infrastructure for precise positioning and navigation. Modern digital technologies such as GNSS course network are able to effectively monitor Earth's crustal movements closely and predict future hazards through precise positioning. Establishment of GNSS course network helps in forecasting of earthquake prone areas to facilitate rapid disaster preparedness and action. It provides GNSS reference data and correction data over the Internet in real time and post-processing to provide accurate location information to GNSS users.GNSS course network helps in accurate updating of geodetic control points and contributes significantly to topographic and cadastral survey work and development work. At present Bangladesh Survey Directorate has 06 (six) GNSS course stations. These were set up in Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna, Rangpur and Moulvibazar in 2011 with the support of JICA. For real time GNSS survey each GNSS course should be spread within a radius of 30 (thirty) kilometers. Bangladesh Survey Directorate is providing real time GNSS services to government, semi-government, private organizations and academic institutions. Due to the huge development activities going on across the country, the demand for real time GNSS services has increased tremendously. But due to the lack of GNSS courses in other areas of the country, a project called "Extending the network scope of GNSS courses and modernizing tidal stations" is underway by Bangladesh Survey Directorate to continue the development activities of those areas and to bring the entire country under the network of GNSS courses. The objective is to establish the GNSS course network of Bangladesh which is mainly to create stations using digital equipment for 73 (seventy three) GNSS course stations in Bangladesh and to establish a data center (server) in Bangladesh Survey Directorate As a result, precise positioning and navigation will be possible at any place in Bangladesh through real time receiver. Objectives of NSS Course Station:

Providing reference GNSS data for real time kinematic (RTK) and post processing GNSS users (all users including Bangladesh Survey Department and other organizations) and providing RTK GNSS services.

Providing GNSS data for displacement monitoring study of tectonic plate of Bangladesh.

Providing GNSS data for earthquake risk assessment studies in different areas of Bangladesh.

Accurately updating all geodetic control point network of Bangladesh.

Identifying accurate displacements and subsidence after major disasters to quantify damage.

The intended effect of this project on service delivery will be to increase public confidence in the government. Some of the expected benefits from this project are as follows:

Topographical and thematic maps will be easy to update using GNSS course stations.

GNSS course stations can be used to monitor tectonic plate movements and determine the location and changes in land structures.

Department of Land Records and Surveys can prepare digital cadastral maps using GNSS course station network. As a result, land owners can easily identify their land using land coordinates. As a result, there will be an unprecedented improvement in the land management of Bangladesh and all land related complications will be solved.

Geo-databases can be prepared from up-to-date information to enable rapid industrialization and urbanization and necessary action to be taken, including land change, prevention of river erosion and natural disasters.

By using GNSS course stations, geodetic control points can be established across the country, existing control points can be updated and properly managed which will play a helpful role in preparing topographical maps. Using GNSS courses, the position of any place can be found instantly.

Car navigation, smooth traffic management can be done using GNSS course station which will play a special role in decongesting traffic.

Modernization of geodetic database using GNSS course i.e. ITRF 2008 to ITRF 2014 or later version.

By using GNSS course stations it will be possible to determine the international boundaries accurately in a short period of time.

Modern agricultural management and agricultural machinery can be operated using GNSS course stations. In this, agricultural work can be conducted in a short time with low cost and limited manpower.

Meteorological information can be obtained very easily by using met sensor in GNSS course station. By using GNSS course station it will be possible to manage aircraft navigation, safe flight and landing.
